Frequently Asked Questions

If I join ROTC, does that mean I am enlisting into the Army?

No. You can join ROTC for the first two years without an obligation and earn a minor in Military Science.

If I enroll in Army ROTC, what is my future service obligation?

Enrolling in the ROTC Basic Course (the first two years of college) does not obligate you to serve unless you receive a scholarship. The friendships gained and leadership experience will last a lifetime.

Can I still choose my college major?

Yes, you can choose any college major you wish. You only need to ensure you graduate to earn your commission. You will earn a minor in Military Science.

What are Army ROTC courses like?

In college, Army ROTC classes normally involve one elective class and one lab per semester. Although the classes involve hands-on fieldwork as well as classroom work, they are standard college classes that fit into a normal academic schedule.

If I'm in Army ROTC, do I still have to attend Basic Combat Training?

No, you’ll receive this training as part of your ROTC coursework, so you do not have to attend Basic Combat Training. If interested, you can request to attend Basic Camp which provides 2nd-year students additinoal training.

What happens when I graduate?

After graduation, you will commission as an Officer in the United States Army in the rank of Second Lieutenant (2LT) and attend Basic Officer Leader Course (BOLC). This course varies on your job (branch) selection and will prepare you for your career as an Army Officer through classroom and field training.

What are my scholarship options?

You can apply for a two (2), three (3), or four-year (4) scholarship depending on your grade level at BSU.

Once approved, you can choose either room and board (a flat $5000) or 100% tuition and fees (varies per student by course load and residency). All students who contract into ROTC will get a $420 monthly stipend (scholarship and non-scholarship).
